Chinese Adjectives : Top List, Pinyin, and How to Learn

Chinese adjectives are words that describe people, places, and things—just like “beautiful” or “happy” in English. In Chinese, adjectives such as 美丽 (měi lì – beautiful) or 高兴 (gāo xìng – happy) make.

At WuKong Education, our online Chinese courses turn everyday words into fun, interactive lessons that boost kids’ confidence in reading, speaking, and writing.

What Are Chinese Adjectives?

Chinese adjectives are descriptive words used to talk about qualities—like size, color, emotion, or personality. They typically come before the noun with the particle “的 (de)” or after the subject with “很 (hěn)” to show degree.

Examples:

  • 她很漂亮。Tā hěn piào liang. — She is pretty.

  • 漂亮的花 piào liang de huā — Pretty flower

Understanding where adjectives go in a sentence helps children form correct word order early on. Because Chinese doesn’t use conjugations like English does, kids can learn to slot adjectives into patterns quickly.

How to Use Chinese Adjectives

Adjectives in Chinese often pair with degree adverbs like 很 (hěn – very), 非常 (fēi cháng – extremely), or 有点 (yǒu diǎn – a little).

  • 他非常高兴。Tā fēi cháng gāo xìng. — He is extremely happy.

  • 这道题有点难。Zhè dào tí yǒu diǎn nán. — This question is a little difficult.

When an adjective directly modifies a noun, it usually takes 的 (de):

  • 漂亮的花 (piào liang de huā) — pretty flower

  • 干净的房间 (gān jìng de fáng jiān) — clean room

adjective + 的 + noun or subject + 很 + adjective
